A Discovery Day with two talks on Buckingham in the morning, and one on 17th century gardens in the afternoon.
Session 1. Buckingham 1 - his life, his portraits, his dancing, the court masques he performed in, the artworks he commissioned from Van Dyck, Rubens, Inigo Jones etc.
Session 2. Buckingham 2 - his collection, which Rubens thought even more magnificent than Charles I's. I will talk about the way collecting worked in the early 17th century, the ambassadors, and fixers who got involved, the difficulties of tracking down and transporting art-works. I will show some of the works Buckingham owned - paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese - classical and Renaissance sculpture.

The Duke and Duchess of Buckingham as Venus and Adonis by Van Dyck, and Cappriccio by unknown artist, of formal house and gardens
Session 3. Then in the afternoon I will give my talk on garden design in the Stuart era, and on embroidery showing gardens. A bit of a change of tone, but staying in the 17th century.
