The Lindisfarne Gospels, made on Holy Island in Northumbria in c720.  is one of the world's most famous and beautiful books A great artistic treasure of these islands.   It marks the transition from the world of Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages. This remarkable book reflects the cultures of the people who lived here and their contacts around the then known world. Join its former curator, Michelle Brown, in excavating the mysteries it contains.

About the Lecturer
Professor Michelle Brown holds a PhD in History and worked at many leading UK universities, but  during her career also became a senior researcher at the university of Oslo and Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts at the British Library. Recent publications include ’The Book and the Transformation of Britain c550-1050' and 'Art of the the Islands: Celtic, Pictish and Ango-Saxon Visual Culture'.
